For a cafe apron, I try to give you the waistband size (say, 16" wide) and the center front length (say, 17".) You need to measure your waist from side to side. That is, put one end of the measuring tape at your side (about where your elbow falls) and the rest of the tape at the other side. How long is that? You should have a length between maybe 14" (congratulations on that diet) and maybe 22". The length down center front doesn't count the waistband. To measure yours, put the tape at about you belly button and go down to the length you'd like your apron to b (presumably somewhere above your knees.) You'll have a length somewhere around 13" to 18". Now, compare your measurements to the apron's. The ties give you some leeway, of course. For a smock apron, I try to give you the approximate measurements at the hips and down center front. You can figure out the hips. Center front should be from the hollow of your throat to your preferred apron length, somewhere above your knees.
For a pinafore apron, I'll give you the waist measurement and the center front length. The waist measurement should match your ful waist (all the way around.) Center front is from belly button to somewhere-above-the-knees again.
Hope this helped. It was a challenge to write!
P.S. The picture above was the cover of the March 9, 1971 _Look_ magazine, illustrating the magazine's cover story, "Backlash Agai Women's Lib." Guess who won?
